Matrix

Conclusion

While not commercial, this project was an important milestone in my exploration as an artist and creative technologist because I think I successfully achieved creating a themed atmosphere, learned a lot about motion capture and coding while using fairly simple technical set up such a single projector, laptop and objects in the living room. Another reason I particularly value this project is how motion design intersects with immersive art as I used kinetic typography.

Concept

Matrix themed interactive experience in a living room. It began with an animated cyberpunk poster that I created for fun which inspired me to take a challenge to build fully immersive environment as I am a Matrix fan and an immersive motion design enthusiast. Using real-time camera input, anyone captured by camera transforms into a code which gets projected on a sofa and code rain world on the background.

The key challenge was scale: turning an ordinary room into a cinematic, cohesive universe with the element of interaction. Every object within the space had to feel integrated into the narrative, the cushion became the blue and red pill with glitch text projection mapped on it. I animated it using AfterEffects.

This informed the use of ASCII art, cyberpunk aesthetics, text glitches, and a tightly controlled colour palette to unify the environment and enhance immersion for the fellow film fans.

Technical

Motion Design Software: Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects.

Interaction Software: Touchdesigner

I achieved the Matrix atmosphere by building 2 visuals in Touchdesigner using 3D texture on a grid and Python to randomize the characters, Nvidia background removal tool was used for data to take shape of anyone in front of the camera. For the data rain I applied text dat, grid and math to control movement. I also used an imported Matrix typeface for full immersion. The text can easily be converted to audioreactive which I feel the  project in that case didn't require. Overall there were 3 textures, 2 of them interactive: motion capture data and matrix rain while the glitch text was an exported looped After Effects animation. Everything was projection mapped using Touchdesigner.

Antarctica

Concept: Interactive Antarctica map presented from an unconventional viewpoint, positioning the viewer at the South Pole and lofi electronic ocean underneath.

Built as a real-time interactive study, it combines spatial design with responsive particle systems.

Particles within the map represent the surrounding ocean and react to movement, while a sci-fi interpretation of water occupies the foreground. Together, these layers explore Antarctica as something distant and abstract, yet real and deeply impacted by human-driven climate change. The atmosphere balances coldness and remoteness with a sense of closeness and responsibility.

Software: Photoshop, Chat Gpt, After Effects and Touchdesigner

AV Philosophy Chair

Concept: Audio Visual Philosophy Chair.

This was a continuation of my animated objects visual research proceeding from Matrix, but now the intended atmosphere shifted from cyberpunk to calm Sci Fi/ philosophy. It was a simple as: what if a chair reacts to me moving the cursor on my laptop? What if abstract symbols vibrate and move around from the music I'm playing? What if I also use a reflective surface? In this way i was esteblishing the artistic relationship with a mundane object in the living room. I also noted that the visual aestheric was very similar to the chaotic kinetic typography experiment yet with a different setting and reacting to music, the kinetic typography creates quite a different impact.

Chaotic kinetic typography

Concept: Motion reactive Letters and numbers making a mess in Hackney Wick warehouse.

Just a single very simple playful visual and minimal technical set up which I feel was visually coherent with this creative unlit space. I chose this responsive animation because I think it expressed the uninhibited creative nature of the local community and it had some charm that people moving in front of the camera  made the typography move in chaotic way.

Software: Touchdesigner

Animated Doors

Concept: Animated Doors

This is one of my early experiments. I projected a colourful generative visual on the wooden door and in the second example a diagram on 2 surfaces creating the illusion of volume. In many cultures doors represent portals to other worlds and I played with this idea in this little project

Technical: I created GLSL texture and the audio reactive diagram and projection mapped them on those doors using Touchdesigner. It was a study on how to work with different textures and create optical illusions.
